Margaret Howell began her career making accessories and selling them to London shops. When by chance she found a beautifully produced vintage shirt, she was so inspired she began to produce her own, and her career in menswear began.
Encouraged by a loyal following, in 1977 Howell opened her first menswear store in London. She was amongst the first British designers to find success in Japan in the 80s and 90s. Howell is inspired by production methods the feel and functionality of a piece and how it feels when worn. Concentrating on natural fabrics such as tweed, linen and cotton, fabrics that last and get better with wear, Margaret Howells philosophy has always been to keep it simple producing high quality clothes based on British traditions.
